Happy Holidays From The Oregon Sheep Dog Society!

Updated: Dec 25, 2023

It is the season of giving and we have some gifts for you! Next year is going to be a big year for us. We are excited to announce our first webinars for the year! Bryan White, Haley Hunewill, Don Helsley and Paddy Fanning will all be joining us this coming year!

Bryan White lives in Bend Oregon on a 130 acre hay ranch. He has been involved with training and trialing Border Collie’s for fourteen years. He has won multiple Open trials throughout the United States and qualified for every major Double Lift trial including Meeker, Soldier Hollow, Blue Grass and the USBCHA finals multiple times with different dogs. For him, true trialing success is being consistently in the top 10% at a trial. His training philosophy is rooted in foundation, fundamentals and fairness. Bryan has generously offered to allow members to submit videos to be reviewed by him and chosen for an evening of feedback on how they can improve. This will be a two part series, one focused on training and one on handling. The first will be January 20th at 7pm followed by the second February 7th at 7pm.

March 6th from 4-6p Haley Hunewill will be live discussing more of our favorite things; stock dogs, stock and trials. Make sure to tune in while we ask Haley all of your questions. Haley Hunewill was raised around Border Collies, trialing and ranch work from an early age. Before having her own dog she would plead with her mother to let her be a “Border Collie” herself and work the sheep. She went to her first field trial in 1998 and placed in the novice class and won the “most promising young handler award”. In 2001 Haley started trialing more seriously with her home trained young female and had quite a bit of success including winning the 2001 Nationals Nursery Finals.  Haley later went on the win the National Cattledog Open Finals, Regional Open Finals, Regional Nursery Finals, was Reserve National Nursery Champion and top 5 several times. Haley represented the USA on two different occasions in the World Trial.  Haley has judged extensively across North America including, Meeker, Bluegrass, Kingston Sheepdog Championship as well as many open trials. Haley slowed down from full time trialing and judging when she got married and started a family, but still trials whenever possible and trains many young dogs each year and gives a lot of lessons to people.  Haley has been raising, training and trialing dogs for over 20 years and particularly enjoys starting dogs from scratch.  Haley has around 120 ewes and helps with her husband’s family’s cattle operation.  We can't wait for her to join us!

You asked and we answered! Mark your calendars, our next Encourager trial is set for February 10th at Brigand's Hideout! We will be at it again bringing you a fun day of challenging courses and learning opportunities for new handlers and anyone looking to sharpen those skills. Novice and Ranch runs $25. After that get ready as we kick off our much anticipated clinic series!

March 2nd and 3rd Amelia Smith will be at Brigand's Hideout teaching the art of the shed. Amelia is a respected trialer, judge and clinician with over 25 years of experience. She has been a finalist in every major trial in the U.S. including Meeker, National Finals, Bluegrass, Soldier Hollow, Western Regionals and Strang Ranch. She was a double lift finalist at Western Regional Finals, multi double lift finalist at Meeker, Bluegrass, Soldier Hollow and the National Finals. She was a World Trial team member in Ireland in 2005. She was 2nd against 55 of Great Britains best at Wooler, England. She is passionate about the art of the shed and she has promised a fun filled weekend to nail that shed and help you shine.

We are thrilled to announce our upcoming Arena Encourager! Join us at the beginning of August in La Grande, Oregon at the county fair! This years theme is "Sew It, Grow It, Show It" and we will be there rounding them up in style at our "Herd It Stock Dog Trial." Grab your boots, shine up those buckles and we will see you out there!
